New and Replacement windows – Our guide on what to consider

Frame and property style

The type of windows that you choose will affect the appearance of your property and has a big impact on the perceived value. It is by far the most important consideration. Choose the frame and style of window that compliments the overall design of your property.
Frame material

Timber

Timber windows production has significantly improved in recent years, with new treatments protecting against rot and preventing decay and water penetration as well as providing resistance to insects and infestations.  Several factory finishes are available that offer lower maintenance and better quality joints and seals improving the thermal properties and noise reduction.  Various designs are available making it easier to select a frame and style that suit your property, in addition bespoke sizes and designs are more affordable as profiles can be made to your specific requirement without the need for additional engineering.

Timber windows can be made to suite a variety of property, from a traditional period property to a modern eco-friendly property where a natural timber adds warmth and texture.

Make sure you check that the timber is sutabale sources.

Aluminium

Aluminium windows have a clean and modern look that goes well with contemporary buildings, loft conversions or new builds.  Aluminium is strong, durable, long-lasting, and low maintenance.  It is available in a range of colours and textures.  Aluminium is also a great choice if you have larger windows as the strength allows for a larger span without support.

PU & PVC

PU and PVC windows are cost effective and low maintenance and over time more sophisticated design have been developed including wood effect frames in traditional styles, such as imitation timber sash windows, as well as modern slimmer frames in a variety of colours and textures. Be mindful of “cheap” PVC windows they can discolour quietly in the sun and have a much shorter lifespan, choose the best quality PU or OVC you can afford to get the most of the your windows.
